American actress, filmmaker, and activist Angelina Jolie was born on June 4, 1975, as Angelina Jolie Voight. She has won three Golden Globes, an Academy Award, a Tony Award, and many other honors. She has also been recognized as Hollywood’s highest-paid actress on several occasions.

As a little girl, Jolie starred with her father, Jon Voight, in the film Lookin’ to Get Out (1982). A decade later, in 1993, she made her feature film debut in the low-budget picture Cyborg 2, and a year later, in 1995, she landed her first main part in Hackers. Jolie earned the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1999 for her portrayal of a psychopath in the drama Girl, Interrupted, after her roles in the biographical television films George Wallace (1997) and Gia (1998). Her role as the lead character in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) made her a well-known figure. Her acting career took off when she landed parts in the action movies Salt (2010), Wanted (2008), and Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005). She was particularly praised for her roles in the plays Changeling (2008) and A Mighty Heart (2007), the latter of which nominated her for an Academy Award for Best Actress. Her other box office hits include the superhero movie Eternals (2021), the fantasy feature Maleficent (2014), and its 2019 follow-up.

From 2008 to 2016, she provided a voice in the Kung Fu Panda animated film series. The war dramas Unbroken (2014), First They Killed My Father (2017), and In the Land of Blood and Honey (2011) were all written and directed by Jolie.

Jolie’s philanthropic endeavors are well-known. She supports women’s rights, education, and conservation as issues. As a Special Envoy of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, she has received recognition for her activism on behalf of refugees. She has traveled to conflict zones and refugee camps all around the world on several field assignments. Jolie was bestowed with several accolades, including the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, and was named an honorary Dame Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George.

Career

At sixteen Jolie made the decision to pursue a career in acting, although at first she struggled to get through auditions, frequently being told that her personality was “too dark.” She starred in multiple music videos, including those for Lenny Kravitz’s “Stand by My Woman” (1991), Antonello Venditti’s “Alta Marea” (1991), The Lemonheads’ “It’s About Time” (1993), and Meat Loaf’s “Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through” (1993), in addition to five of her brother’s student films produced while he was a student at the USC School of Cinema-Television. She was featured on the Widespread Panic album cover Everyday in 1993. Then Jolie noticed her father’s way of watching others to become like them, and she learnt from him.

Their relationship was less strained during this time, with Jolie realizing that they were both “drama queens”.

In 1993, Jolie began her career in cinema as a professional actor when she portrayed a near-human robot created for corporate espionage and assassination in the science fiction sequel Cyborg 2, which was released straight to video. She didn’t reapply for a year since she was so unhappy with the movie. She starred in her first large-scale studio picture, Hackers (1995), after playing a minor part in the indie film Without Evidence (1995). Jolie’s role, according to reviewer Janet Maslin of the New York Times, “stands out… because she scowls even more sourly than [her co-stars] and is that rare female hacker who sits intently at her keyboard in a see-through top.” Although the movie didn’t turn a profit at the box office, the hackers gained a cult following after its release.
